I have to admit I am rather excited that Downton Abbey is back on our screens this Autumn, but also very sad that it’s to be the last ever series! It is the epitome of autumnal viewing isn’t it? Dark evenings curled up on the sofa by the fire watching the latest scandals in the Crawley household – love love love it. For those of you who watch the series, you’ll know that Downton has steamed well and truly into the roaring twenties and we all know that this is the exquisite era which heralded the birth of the Art Deco movement in design and architecture. It is also one of the key looks around in so many of this Autumn’s homeware collections, so whether you’re a Downton fan or not, I’ve looked into some of the best places where you can find a little glamour and glitz to adorn your home Downton-style this season…
M&S has a fabulous range of Art Decor inspired home accessories and furnishings in store this A/W and is worth a look for clocks, sunburst mirrors and ornaments in the style. I spotted this little mantelpiece clock which, with its elegant lines and rich gold and black colour, is really a standout timepiece very reminiscent of the era.
One for the dog lovers, this little greyhound would sit very nicely alongside a black and gold lamp on a mirrored side table. Its clean lines and simple design have the Art Deco influence and what country estate home is complete without it?
Pineapples are everywhere at the moment and this statement table lamp embodies this trend with the sophisticated Art Deco colour combination of black and gold. I like how it’s quirky yet classy at the same time. Would fit into most decor schemes as a stand out piece.
Zara has a new range of homeware in this season described as ‘Victorian Vintage’, however despite the name, I think there is an elegant feel to this bedding set from the range which features a beautiful geometric print in soft shades of gold and cream. I imagine this would look right at home in Lady Mary’s boudoir! I like how the bedlinen has been given a modern twist with the addition of the acrylic side table, also from Zara (info here). Set against a dark blue or charcoal backdrop, this bedlinen would be simply stunning.
Also from Zara, I really like this octagonal side table with mirrored top. Although brimming with Art Deco influence, it would sit well in a contemporary setting and even if a little more pricey, it’s worth it for the standout modern design which will last for years. The gold finish will add so much warmth to your autumnal decor scheme.
How gorgeous is this little coffee cup and saucer set? Perfect for that after dinner coffee with friends. I absolutely love the geometric pattern. This one is also lovely – perhaps you could mix them up?
The new ‘Luxe Life’ A/W collection at Next Home offers a wonderful array of home accessories and furnishings in shimmering fabrics, metallics and geometric forms, very much a nod to the luxe deco of the twenties. From curtains to cushions, this is the place to shop for soft furnishings in glamorous shimmery metallics, such as this large geo print cushion in bronze (also available in grey/bronze in smaller size).
And how luxurious are these eyelet curtains from the same range? Tone them down with matte greys or make them really stand out with a dark charcoal shade.
Add a touch of elegance and glamour to your sofa or bed with a faux fur throw. As well as giving much needed extra cosiness and warmth over the colder months, it will add textural interest to your room, especially when there are a lot of shiny metallic fabrics and accessories around. Wolf and husky faux furs are very on trend this season, as seen here and here. This one from George at Asda is a good budget option!
What about the perfect backdrop to these luxe accessories? The twenties saw an increased popularity for shades of blue, teal and grey, as well as lighter neutrals such as oyster and cream. Try the Crown Trade Art Deco collection for inspiration or check out these room schemes whose wall colours have been influenced by Art Deco trends…
Oyster… this is a soft green tinted neutral that works well in any decor scheme. This art deco apartment typifies the style with plush velvet upholstery and polished wood.

Dark blue… this is a stunning canvas for cream, gold and tan furnishings. Also, how gorgeous is that marble topped side table? This is the perfect example of how to do modern day art deco.

Teal / Peacock blue… this is the perfect shade to go for if you like brights in your decor scheme. The mustard yellow chair and pale parquet flooring are beautifully set off by this wonderfully rich peacock blue colour – very typical of the Art Deco colour palette.

Dark grey… again a modern take on Art Deco luxury with soft slate walls, mirrored side tables, geometric patterned floor covering and a statement chrome light fitting. Cool elegance, done perfectly.
