It’s just under a week to go until my quite possibly favourite time of the year – Hallowe’en. I have such fond childhood memories of all the activities that are associated with this ancient, Celtic festival, from ducking for apples to carving horrid faces out of turnips, as well as the nasty smell that went with it when they were lit at night! I still love Hallowe’en today – even the chilly, smoky air on these clear nights almost smells of it!
Of course, Hallowe’en is a big festival aimed at kids and my three are especially excited about getting dressed up to go trick or treating this year, however I think it’s also a good excuse for us grown ups to have some friends over and enjoy a spookily themed meal together at the table or sit around a crackling fire with hands wrapped around a warming, spicy glass of mulled cider.
I’ve been picking up a few decorative Hallowe’en bits and pieces for my home over the past few weeks and decided to pop into a new TK Maxx store which has just recently opened not far from where I live. I found some great, really reasonably priced Hallowe’en decor goodies which I wanted to share with you, along with some little ideas on how you can create the perfect spooky table for your grown-up guests over the holidays!
I talked in my last post about how I love this time of year for the cosy touches we can bring into our home to prepare for relaxed evenings by the fire, snuggling down into soft cushions and enjoying taking life that little bit more slowly. It is also, of course, a time to reintroduce cosy textures into our wardrobes, as we pack away our flimsy summer threads and begin to cocoon ourselves once more in wonderfully warm layers of big woollen scarves, oversized jumpers and long socks.
Love, love, love this time of year!
In fact, I had been clearing out my own wardrobe recently to begin the gradual transition to Autumnal climes, when I was offered the chance to try out a new style of unique watch from US brand JORD. They produce both women’s and men’s wooden watches in a range of styles and finishes and upon checking out their website, I immediately felt they would be the ideal wrist accessory for the season ahead! Even better, JORD include free international shipping with every watch purchase and I was delighted to receive my Fieldcrest women’s watch within 10 days of my order.
It never ceases to amaze me how quickly Autumn lands upon us once the kids are back to school at the beginning of September. First I notice a slightly fresher chill in the air on our morning walks to school, then I go for a run in the park with a friend and we marvel at how the leaves are turning golden. The garden especially is showing lots of Autumnal signs, as the Japanese acers start to turn a beautiful fiery red. I can’t wait to see how the garden looks in another month or so.
However, back indoors we go, as the purpose of this post is to look at pieces we can buy for the home to welcome in the new season and finally let go of Summer for another year. I personally love the Autumn for all the rich colours and textures we can bring into our decor to make our homes feel welcoming and cosy, and when the kind folks at TK Maxx sent me a gift card to spend in their store, needless to say I was delighted! They have recently brought in their new range of Autumn homewares and I couldn’t wait to get over to my local store to take a look around.
Here are some pieces I found that will help you bring your home from Summer into Autumn, all for less than a fiver each!
Now that Autumn is well underway, and in preparation for the Winter months yet to come, it’s time to cosy up our homes. When the temperature dips towards freezing and that cold autumnal wind blows, there are fewer simple pleasures in life than coming home to a warm, welcoming retreat at the end of a long day, kicking your shoes off, wrapping up in cosy layers and enjoying the warmth and comfort….. However, we need to create this perfect winter hideaway first and sometimes it can be a struggle to bring it all together at a time of year that has its own added expenses, so here are a few ideas on how you can nail the Autumn retreat look for your home with a few key tweaks…
We are well and truly into autumn now and looking back, September has been pretty kind to us here in Northern Ireland. Plenty of autumnal sunshine, crisp misty mornings and not a lot of the usual wet stuff falling onto our heads! Hopefully it’s a sign of the times to come and we can expect settled weather and lots of long walks in the beautiful countryside as the season changes.
September for me not only marks the beginning of my absolute favourite time of year, it is also my birthday month and I was very spoilt this year with a scrummy dinner out with my other half and of course some gorgeous gifts too. Who said turning 39 was a bad thing? If 40 is half as good as this birthday, I’ll be a happy girl!
Have a look at some of my lovely new treasures and find out what else I’ve been loving this month… (more…)
It’s always refreshing to find a new destination for fabulous homewares and I was not disappointed when I came across the new ‘Home’ range at Hush. Better known for its gorgeously chic yet simple womenswear, the Home collection at Hush is a new concept which encompasses lifestyle products such as throws and blankets, fragrances for the home including delicately scented candles, as well as loungewear and a small selection of beauty products. An exclusive collection still in its infancy, this collection of pieces is reflective of the qualities that in my opinion define the Hush brand: simplicity, understated style & easy living. I really hope this collection of pieces continues to develop and grow as I think it has incredible potential with these qualities at the fore. (more…)
I have to admit I am rather excited that Downton Abbey is back on our screens this Autumn, but also very sad that it’s to be the last ever series! It is the epitome of autumnal viewing isn’t it? Dark evenings curled up on the sofa by the fire watching the latest scandals in the Crawley household – love love love it. For those of you who watch the series, you’ll know that Downton has steamed well and truly into the roaring twenties and we all know that this is the exquisite era which heralded the birth of the Art Deco movement in design and architecture. It is also one of the key looks around in so many of this Autumn’s homeware collections, so whether you’re a Downton fan or not, I’ve looked into some of the best places where you can find a little glamour and glitz to adorn your home Downton-style this season…
Hello and an official welcome to Autumn! It’s been a while since I wrote a ‘Spend vs Save’ post, but with so many gorgeous new Autumn homewares arriving into stores, it’s really hard to resist a spot of seasonal shopping, isn’t it? There are plenty of exciting new trends emerging, too. From that cosy, tartan-bedecked highland retreat look to the ultra-luxe geometric forms of an Art Deco setting, there is definitely something for everyone out there.
However, one trend that I think truly defines Autumn and therefore has a much broader appeal, is the Woodland one. Who doesn’t love textile prints inspired by owls and autumn leaves or felt foxes on cushions? The woodland trend is once again huge this year and is as prevalent throughout the higher end labels as it is on the high street, so it really boils down to what you are prepared to spend on key pieces for your home. With this in mind, I’ve done a little window-shopping for you and come across a few home accessories that really rock the trend in different ways; some contemporary, others with a more traditional feel. Read on for my must-haves!
Like it or not, the Autumn/Winter season is almost upon us! By September, homeware retailers will be full of the promise of cosy nights in by the fire curled up on your favourite armchair with the rain lashing against the windows. I have to admit, I absolutely love the onset of Autumn and everything associated with it, the latest offerings of cosy homewares not excluded…
I recently picked up a copy of the M&S Home catalogue for Autumn ’15 and it appears that as with their forthcoming AW15 clothing ranges, they are spot on trendwise with their homeware collections, too. Plenty of Danish influence which is pretty hot on the homeware scene (and set to stick around) and also lots of rich colour combinations (such as berry and teal), Boho luxe and Art Deco style. (more…)
