Pinterest has reported a huge increase in the number of saved pins and searches relating to pastel colours in decorating, with walls, cushions, bedlinen and sofas all being prettified in shades of powder pink, lemon yellow, baby blue and mint green.

Inject a little colour and personality into a white and grey Scandinavian style scheme with pastel-coloured throw cushions (try here for some lovely ones), liven up your dining table with plates and cups in spring-like lilacs, pistachio greens and light coral, or be brave and embrace the trend for pastel with a wall or back of a door painted in your favourite ice cream colour… strawberry, anyone?

Natural textures and handwoven embellishments have been around for the last year or two, but that’s not to say they’re going anywhere soon.  Macramé wall hangings, tassels, woven lampshades, fringed cushions and basket weaves all reflect our love of the relaxed, boho vibes that these pieces bring into our homes.  The textured finish of handwoven, natural or crafted pieces helps to soften a minimalistic or monochrome scheme and make it feel more inviting, so add a woven macramé hanging to a bare wall, pop your houseplant into a belly basket or mix in some interesting woven and fringed cushions to your sofa.  These simple changes will ensure you’re bang on trend this year.  Oh, and don’t forget the bamboo light shade, too…

The trend for greenery in the home is set to become huge this year, and it seems the more, the merrier, so don’t be afraid to introduce houseplants in every size, shape and colour to any room in the home.  There does seem to be an increase in popularity for hanging plants or plants trailing off high shelves, according to the people behind Pinterest, but there is equally an ongoing trend for oversized leafy varieties set into woven baskets, tying in nicely with the artisanal trend I outlined earlier.

Add interest to a coffee table, empty corner of a room or kitchen shelf with a pop of foliage, be it a set of succulents, some potted spring bulbs or a leafy palm tree.  At least this trend is affordable and good for your health!

After a period of preference for the bleached wood and white painted furniture seen across Scandinavian interiors, it seems there is going to be a return to darker woods such as walnut and mahogany.  This has been a trend simmering away in the background for a time, however it has become much more prevalent now, with darker furnishings appearing in high street stores, often embellished with metallic trims and marble surfaces, bringing in a much more ‘modern luxe’ look.  Expect this trend to grow and grow, especially with our love for retro pieces of furniture and midcentury influence.

First it was chrome, then copper and gold; now it’s time for brass!  Again this trend has been bubbling away for a while now, but it’s definitely one to embrace, as this beautiful metallic can bring a wonderful warmth and elegance to a space.

Introduce brass accents into your home with the addition of a table lamp or light fitting with brass detailing (check out the selection available here), or update your chrome kitchen taps and cabinet handles with antiqued brass versions for a modern rustic-industrial feel, as seen below.

It can be as simple as one or two new pieces in the home, reflecting one or more of the above trends, to bring your current decor into 2018.  Or you might have items already in the home that you can upcycle or use in a different way – the question is, which trend do you feel most drawn to?

Have fun updating your home with some of these ideas… :)
