Here we are at the end of October… how on earth did that happen?! It seems that just as we are fully embracing all that this particularly beautiful Autumn has had to offer, our thoughts are beginning to turn from falling leaves, countryside foraging and smoky bonfires to frosty mornings, twinkling fairy lights and late night shopping. However, before we get to all of that, let’s take a wee breather with my monthly look back at some of the things I’ve been loving this October…
With the clocks just turned back by an hour, it’s amazing how suddenly darker and more wintry the season feels. At this time of year, we have an innate need to envelope ourselves in warmth and cosiness, wrapping up in warm layers against the cold and often damp weather. This need for warmth is reflected at home, too – we bring out the soft blankets, plush throws, padded eiderdowns and knitted cushions; we light scented candles to bathe our homes in warming, sweetly spiced fragrances; we draw curtains, switch on lamps and light the fire to create a softly flickering, warming glow.
Recently, myself and a friend popped along to the NI ‘Love Your Home’ Show which was being held in the Titanic Exhibition Centre in Belfast’s iconic Titanic quarter. It was a chance to see what’s new and trending in the home and garden design market, as well as checking out local craft makers, retailers, suppliers and designers.
The Love Your Home Show (www.yourhome.ie) is Northern Ireland’s largest event specifically created for home lovers, with over 120 exhibitors offering products, advice and inspiration. It’s the perfect opportunity for visitors to discuss their home renovation and decor plans with industry experts or simply wander around exhibits such as the Garden & Outdoor Living Zone and the Craft & Design Village.
There was certainly plenty to inspire the home loving enthusiast, but here is a small selection of a few things that caught my eye in particular… (more…)
Now that Autumn is well underway, and in preparation for the Winter months yet to come, it’s time to cosy up our homes. When the temperature dips towards freezing and that cold autumnal wind blows, there are fewer simple pleasures in life than coming home to a warm, welcoming retreat at the end of a long day, kicking your shoes off, wrapping up in cosy layers and enjoying the warmth and comfort….. However, we need to create this perfect winter hideaway first and sometimes it can be a struggle to bring it all together at a time of year that has its own added expenses, so here are a few ideas on how you can nail the Autumn retreat look for your home with a few key tweaks…
Autumn will soon be well underway and as we prepare for yet darker evenings, it’s time to reconsider the lighting in our homes. Nobody likes to come home from a long day at work or school to a cold, uninviting home, but thankfully we can easily warm up the ambience with some simple lighting updates at this time of year.
Here are a few pointers to ensure you get your lighting right and of course where to find some lighting gems too…
It’s National Wool Week in the UK this week, a campaign launched in October 2010 which aims to “showcase the natural benefits and versatility of wool in fashion, furnishings and everyday life”. Now, I have to admit I like to dabble in a spot of the old knitting and crochet, but National Wool Week is not only about promoting crafting with real wool – it is a celebration of the use of pure wool in fashion, interiors and textiles, too. So, what better week to have a look at some of the loveliest wool homewares around that you can get your hands on and help be a part of this fantastic initiative?
